Greyson Fletcher’s Steaming Wheels
Here’s a couple shots of Christain Fletcher’s son Greyson who was hanging out in Bali all last summer and was lighting up the sessions at BASE park and Julien’s backyard bowl jams on the regular. Greyson definitely inherited his dads ability to throw down some air. Kid’s got some f%#king pop! He’s also the only person I know that’s had a hedgehog crawl down his pants at 3 am on the back of a motorcycle…

lost pool
i wanted to post this pic of a pool we skated not to long ago, it was funny how we found it, we had heard about the pool through a friend of a friend, no one really knew where it was though… so we decided to just wing it, we started of from Nathans house (hes the man in the pic) just driving with no direction functioning on intuition alone, as we went along we began to just start calling out the turns ahead of time feeling our way out to the pool, the amazing thing is after about a half hour of driving we enede up at an abandon house in a field with a spiral staircase in the yard, holy molly could this be it… so we ran through the house jumped through the no gone picture window in the back and there it was gleaming in all its glory, it was some serious voodoo how we found that place, we rode it for the next month until the house got bulldozed all together. it was awesome

Welcome to Spacecraft, Jake Blauvelt!
Bellingham Board Meeting
In a not-so-rare meeting of Northwest Astronauts; Forum Pro, Jake Blauvelt was inducted into the Spacecraft Astronaut squad. The Induction process though informal, did consist of multiple oyster shooters and high-fives. Jake has been a friend to many of Spacecraft’s talented athletes for some time and joined the family with promises to spread goodwill, spray powder, and throw buckets in Bali. A recent transplant from Vermont, Jake now calls Washington State and Mt. Baker home. According to Patrick McCarthy, “ Jake is an east coast version of a Bellingham native; an amazing addition to the NW crew!” Blauvelt can be seen in Brain Farm’s “That’s it that All”, Forum’s “Forum or Against ‘em”, as well as gracing the covers of several shred mags. Look for Jake in upcoming Spacecraft all-star sticker sheets. We’re happy to call him friend. Welcome Jake. Make it happen!

Wave Powerplant Goes Live in Portugal
The world’s first commercial wave farm went live at the end of September in Agucadoura, located off the coast of northern Portugal. Designed by Pelamis Wave Power, the farm employs three Wave Energy Converters - snakelike, semi-submerged devices that generate electricity with hydraulic rams driven by waves. This first phase of the new renewable energy farm is rated at 2.25 MW with 3 machines, and the the second phase will add an additional 25 machines to bring the capacity to 21 MW - enough to power 15,000 homes!
Each Pelamis Wave Energy Converter measure 140 meters long and 3.5 meters in diameter, so they do take up significant amount of space out in the ocean. Still, the potential from this energy source is huge - the world’s waves are estimated to generate 2 Terawatts of power. To put that in perspective, the US currently has a generating capacity of just over 1 TW.
Pelamis Wave Energy Converters are tethered to the ocean floor by cables and are pointed perpendicular to the coastline. Each device is composed of several sections connected with articulated joints. As the waves roll in past the device, each section is driven up and down, while the hydraulic rams inside resist the motion. This resistance pumps high pressure fluid through hydraulic motors, which drive electric generators, thereby producing electricity. This electricity is then transmitted via underwater cables to the mainland.
Naturally, the amount of electricity generated depends upon the power of the waves at any given time, so like wind and solar energy, the electricity generated is not on demand. It’s an exciting renewable resource however, and Portugal’s new wave farm marks an important first step towards proving the technology, creating demand, and driving down the price. Soon you might see these off your local beach, assuming the conditions are right.
